I've Made My Final Decision

Kinja'd!!!9 Kinja'd!!! 31

If you have been keeping track with my posts you'll probably realize that I've been taking suggestions on a second car to go along with my current DD, my 95 Saturn.

I've gone from sensible ideas like a Ford Flex down to crazy ideas like considering a Viper. Just the other day I was stuck on the Honda Civic Si, there are really good deals out there for below $13k by the way just to let you know.Fortunately I've been steered away from the foolishness of trying to impress others and have decided what to actually buy that's reasonable and definitely within my budget of $15k and it would have never dawned upon me if it wasn't for making a parts run with my friend.

As we were leaving AutoZone a Cleaaaaaan 87-93 Foxbody GT pulled up beside me. Fresh red paint, tinted windows and that a nice cam lope. Much like this albeit different wheels.

Kinja'd!!!

Beautiful that car was. It then rekindled a passion that I had for Mustangs especially that generation. So I got home and went mustang crazy looking up deals and getting an idea of what type of mustang I could get for the money. Unfortunately the '03-'04 Cobra "Terminator" is out of my budget or else the search would have stopped there.

Kinja'd!!!

Then I remembered a recent Matt Farrah " !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! " video highlighting the Mach 1 Mustang which has a pretty decent cult following for those in the know. With its shaker hood and 32V 4.6L motor amongst other improvements that make it a great base for a power build it can be found with under 70k miles for under $13k. Has great looks and all but that would put me near my budget threshold and I want something I can play around with and do some modifications.

Kinja'd!!!

But since I was doing thorough research into all iterations of the 'Stang that I could afford I figured to also take a look at the '05-'09 model years as well. That and MotorTrend's !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! budget build made me take it into consideration. They have a few modern amenities and aren't bad lookers at all. I've gone from loving their design, to hating it, back to loving it again. I'd put a more aggressive body kit on it but they are nice vehicles nonetheless. Issue is again they'd be pushing the outer limits of my budget so I shied away from them.

Kinja'd!!!

I quite like the updated look of this platform especially in '13-'14 model because of the factory smoked out taillights and Xenon (or HID I've forgotten which) headlights. But in order to get one I'd have to extend my budget or settle for a V6. Don't get me wrong the V6 in those is quite the performer and if you're the owner of on you have nothing to be ashamed about because you can beat stock GTs of the previous generation quite easily on the regular but I've always told myself if I were to get a Mustang I need the V8. The signature sound is what always drew me towards it and is what rekindled my desire for one yet again.

Kinja'd!!!

If you're still reading or just simply scrolled to the bottom I've decided to go with......

A 5.0 '87-93 Fox Body Mustang. I've planned on making the purchase towards the latter end of Autumn anyway so it'll give me time to make the car my own over the winter and have it ready by spring. All I'll need is a clean one, they can be had for a few grand easily and start my own build. The best part is I'll have a sizeable budget left over for modifications at my own pace and should have it running in the low 12s by the time the weather warms back up. It'll also give me great quality time wrenching on a car with my old man.

I wholeheartedly support this decision, because I have a serious soft spot for these too. Good luck with the search.

Trust me I considered VTAK heavily. Too heavily. Also I'm not done considering one. It simply lost the battle this time around. I want to experience RWD V8 power for once and not in the family Suburban we used to have.

Just a bit of comfort for your soul, next year I plan on doing an EG hatch build or possibly picking up a well sorted one for about $5k or so. I can never leave the Temple of VTEC. It's like Scientology, once you're in THERE'S NO WAY OUT.....

Thank you very much. I think it's time I upgrade from my 4cyl life and see what V8s have in store. Plus this will look and sound amazing next to the old mans 'Vette he plans on getting hopefully this winter or spring. He's heavily looking into C4s.

MMMM that front clip in the second picture...I have a thing for 4 eyed headlights. They just seem so upscale.

Not a bad suggestion. That unfortunately is an automatic. I need a manual transmission in my stable to get the full effect.

yeah those Capris in particular are pure 1980s $ex. I forgot what year/trim got that front airdam, but I think it was the 85-6 RSs.

Stop throwing things!! I shall not be swayed.

When it's time for my dad to do his Corvette shopping I will most certainly call upon your deal finding abilities. That's a solid deal especially at that buy it now price.

I'll have to do a little research and see if that front clip is interchangeable because if it is it will be done. Now just to figure out what color I would want it....Have a few months do decide so I'll see.

I could end up looking odd tho, because a standard Mustang Fox doesn't have the fender flare on the rear. So you'd have the flare on the front fenders and not on the rears.

Just did some research on it and yep that's what it said. That said I'd leave the Capri's alone considering how few of them are still around. Think I'll just get another body kit from the available options. I already planned on flaring the fenders regardless because it just looks amazing.

Nope not going that far with the flares. Going with something a little more subtle like the ones Matt Farah is using on his build. I don't plan on having enough power to push those around.

Love the Capri.
I had an 83, 5.0, 4spd., (looks like an 83 in the last photo), what I didn't love was the TRX tires and rims....

good choice - A guy I went to highschool with with had an 88 Saleen in the traditional white - beautiful car that made beautiful noise. Honestly, I still prefer the looks of the 87-93 over the following generation - love that nose and the rear hatch lines.

Awesome, I'm looking forward to the build! I love Foxes. I originally started looking at a few but I couldn't justify the price. I had thought getting an 86 5.0 that needed some work, but in the end I would need something that didn't take a lot of work due to time and money.

That said, I love my Mach!

Good luck on the search!

This is one car that has been a classic since day one. And I must agree, the new era design did nothing for me. Far too many curves for my liking. It did look rather nice once they updated it towards the tail end of it's life cycle.

I'm honestly glad I went Mustang crazy because I finally know how good the Mach 1 is. Up to this point I had always thought it was just some appearance package tossed onto GTs but man was I wrong. That is an amazing specimen of a vehicle and if I can get a functional shaker in onto my Fox it will happen.

Ya, it's a very underrated Mustang in my opinion. It did kind of get overshadowed by the Cobra though. It's awesome to have one, after finding so many trashy and beat up Mustang's in my price range finding a clean Mach was unbelievable.

The great thing about the Fox is that there is so much aftermarket support for it you won't have any trouble finding parts or the solution to a problem.

As much as I like and respect the legendary Fox Body, personally I'd go for the 5th gen GT, a 2010 or later.

Heh, yea, true. I said the GT but I posted the Boss 302 because I cheated.

But you should be able to find a GT in this range, no?

Kinja'd!!!

Was sorely tempted to get this, but ended up with my '08 TL .

Advantages, to my mind, of the 5th gen over the Fox:

- much newer platform, obviously. 1979 was a long time ago.

- more modern interiors/more toys

- more safety

I'm not a big enough of a Mustang fan to tell you there may be other differences like reliability, ride/handling, but I'm guessing this might be the case too. Again, the Fox Body deserves enormous respect (especially as a budget, DIY muscle project platform) but for DD purposes, the newer cars wins in my opinion.

Nope not at all. If I want a V6 there are plenty, even with the sport package. A 2011+ GT just isn't going to happen unfortunately. I currently have my Saturn for DD duty. And when that dies I'll get another reasonable car as a DD. The Fox is strictly for fun. I'm already planning to swap in new seats. May eliminate the backseat altogether. Still up in the air on it but the Fox will most certainly just be a car for my enjoyment and a few track days. I looked at those TLs but their prices don't drop when you're looking for one that's a manual and has reasonable mileage. Also I'd want a manual Type-S and there's no way that I'd find one to plop into my hands.
